Nurses Unite- The Midwife Perspective

Nurses Unite to provide excellent care! I am a midwife and that is how I introduce myself. However, I am also a nurse and am a Certified Nurse Midwife. When I started my path to midwifery, I never planned to become a nurse first. I also never planned to be so proud to be a nurse. Nurses are an integral part of the health care team and deserve recognition. The training and sacrifice involved in this profession are profound. Honestly, when I started my nursing training I had no idea how deep the roots of nursing were. One of my personal heroines, Mary Breckinridge, was a nurse who transformed maternity care in the United States. If you have never heard of her, please take the time to do so. In the end, my path through nursing was perfect for me and I am so glad to be counted in the ranks of American nurses.

Here I am with two of my “doctor” stethoscopes, one for Mom and one for Baby. In my practice, where no doctor is to be found, I use these tools on a daily basis.  Not pictured here are my fetoscope and Pinard horn. Recently, there has been a lot of buzz around nurses using a stethoscope so I had to chime in and give props where props are due.
