Of course, 2020 was a tumultuous year. For me, there was one silver lining; I got to fulfill a lifelong dream of writing a book. Over the course of a couple months, in coffee shops, in my home and wherever I happened to be, I hunkered down and poured part of my heart and soul into words, sentences and paragraphs until there was a complete book. My book, Midwifery for Expectant Parents is my offering to the world, to families and to my midwife colleagues. My goal is to help educate consumers about the Midwifery Model of Care as well as helping families on their journey to becoming parents. To spread the love for midwives and midwifery. To this end, I came with the idea of the Midwifery Book Bomb.
The idea came to me while I was driving through my neighborhood to pick up my daughter from school. There is a Little Free Library on the way and I have always loved the philosophy behind this movement. A free, community resource for the sharing of books, the “take one, leave one” concept is so rooted in the community….much like midwifery itself. I decided to leave one of my books, then I decided to leave my books in other little libraries in my town. Then, I thought about getting the book shared in little libraries all over the country. Hence the Midwifery Book Bomb project was born. I started sharing my own efforts on social media and invited others to join in and share the book in their own communities. So far, it has been shared in 23 states! I have set a goal of getting at least one, hopefully much more, in each state. Interested in joining the fun? Read below.
Step One: Purchase a copy of the book, you can use one of these links:
- Through Barnes & Noble
- Or on Amazon
Step Two: find a local Little Free Library, or other free community book resource. Place the book and snap a picture of you doing so.
Step Three: Upload the pic to social media, use the #midwiferybookbomb tag and also tag my profile (Aubre Tompkins and/or A Midwife On The Path) as well.
Step Four: Send me a message through Facebook or Instagram with your name and mailing address, then I will send you a new copy of the book, autographed with a personal message.
Fun fact, I do not make any money related to individual sales of my book. I was paid a one time lump sum, so I am not doing this to make money. I am truly working to educate the public and support pregnant families through expanding the knowledge of midwives and the care we provide.
P.S. Do you like my green “Midwifery is Activism” sweatshirt? You can order your own plus all kinds of other great stuff at Rise Up Midwife.
